Good fun even if you’re not a Rubik’s Cube expert, August 24, 2010

I should probably say that I am a bit of a puzzle nut. I own dozens and dozens of Rubik’s cubes and similar types of twisty puzzles. So I might be a bit biased in my assessment. However you don’t have to be a hardcore cuber to enjoy the Rubik’s Slide.

To “move” the lights you push the top either direction horizontally or vertically. The lights will move in the direction you push, with the row/column wrapping back around to the other side. You can also twist the top clockwise/counterclockwise to make the lights rotate about the center square.

There are a couple different modes. In timed mode you try to complete a set number of puzzles in a certain time limit. I prefer free play where you just take your time solving a puzzle before moving on to the next. It has 3 difficulty levels. Each mode feels about the right difficulty. Easy is pretty easy. Medium is moderately harder. Hard is quite challenging.

One problem is that each time you turn off the game, it “resets.” When you play free mode, it generally starts with the easiest puzzles and they get somewhat harder as you continue. If you turn it off, it goes back to the easiest puzzles when you start again. If you let it auto-shutoff (by not doing anything for 1-2 minutes) then it’ll pick up where you left off. But it would be nice to be able to turn it off manually and continue where you left off. Also there’s no way to skip a puzzle if you get stuck except turning it off and starting back from the beginning.

Still in spite of the interface shortcomings it’s a fun puzzle. You can generally figure out a puzzle in anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Even those times where I couldn’t quite figure out the solution I always managed to “luck” into the solution within a few minutes.

A nice “twist” on an old concept, August 14, 2010

This is a great new toy from Rubiks. If you’ve ever played with the classic Rubik’s Cube, you know that it’s a fun challenge, but also just that: very challenging. I really never got the hang of the original Cube concept, although I know some friends who became experts. The new Slide is a great new “twist” on this old concept, as it uses changing lights on just a single surface to emulate the movements of the squares on a cube. But these movements are also unique to the Slide, and add a new dimension of puzzling that will keep you entertained for hours. The 3 levels of difficulty are really great to keep this toy enjoyable for all ages; small kids can pickup on the easy level and keep busy racking up their winning streak as a high score, whereas adults can jump into the hard difficulty and still be really challenged to solve the puzzles.
As way of explanation, the Slide requires you to push and twist the top half of the toy to make the lights move accordingly into a required position to solve the challenge. Each challenge begins with one pattern which you need to move into the finishing pattern shown by hitting the triangle button on the side of the device.

So I never got the hang of the original Rubik’s Cube, but the Rubik’s Slide is right up my alley. I love that it is also electronic which is perfect for the upcoming generation of technology-loving kids! What you do is preview a puzzle by seeing the lights and then you twist and turn until you can accomplish the same puzzle. It is pretty small and very easy to keep in your purse, backpack or wherever else you may need to whip something out to kill time or keep your kids busy. The recommend ages are 8 and up, but I let my almost 4-year old play with it and even though he has no clue what he is doing I have a feeling he will get the hang of it quickly.

I would say this is like the original Rubik’s Cube cut in half and battery operated! It is addicting and whether you like the original Rubik’s Cube or not, it is a fun game. I even found my husband playing with it during commercial breaks of the football games! It is challenging though so be warned!
