My 8-year old received the Magic School Bus Oceans game recently. It’s a good fit for her since she enjoys the Magic School Bus TV series and she’s an ardent animal lover.

The style of the imagery and the characters are true to the Magic School Bus series but the voices are not those of the actors in the TV series. My daughter notices the difference but doesn’t seem to mind.

She enjoys the games and activities, as well as the ‘closer peek’ feature that shows photos of sea creatures and explains what makes each one unique. My daughter likes cobbling together sea creatures characters and mastering the straightforward challenges of each game. There’s a maze where she negotiates a sting ray through a coral reef maze while gobbling up coins and avoiding predators. There’s a drawing game that rewards accuracy by revealing a refined illustration of the mystery sea creature being drawn. There’s also a game that requires her to select creatures with similar features before the drift off screen.

The games have a slower pace than Crafting Mama, which is a relief since Crafting Mama tends to challenge her dexterity and eye-hand coordination too the point of frustration (even though my daughter plays piano very well for her age). If the pace makes her interest wane then I can hand the game down to our youngest child so this is not a big concern in our household.

All in all the games are appropriate for mellow kids ages 6-8 or more active kids ages 5-7 (my 10-year old fit this category).

I researched lists and lists of DS games in order to find the perfect, first DS game for my 6 year old son. Not yet a strong reader I wanted a game that had little to no reading involved. I also wanted a recent game that had nice graphics. The Magic School Bus Oceans game is so perfect. It introduced his little hands to the stylus pen and how to use it as well as the buttons to maneuver through timed obstacles. He has to learn about each level of the ocean by listening to short snippets of info throughout and remembering what he learned because to pass the level he has to answer 3 questions at the end. I’m so pleased with this game and I HOPE Magic School Bus creates more like this.

This game has a teaching mode then after you review the ocean animals info you play a game that will challenge your learning skills. My 8 yr old loves it. My 5 year old cannot really play bacause you need to be able to read. Great game packed with little games. As an adult I learned a few things too.
